The same metallurgical discipline that serves aerospace customers also governs the strip in your 18650 pack.
Nickel-plated steel costs less upfront but introduces two failure modes at scale: (1) the plating layer can micro-crack during spot welding, exposing the steel substrate to electrolyte vapor and triggering rust that increases contact resistance over time; (2) steel's higher bulk resistivity (≈ 0.15 μΩ·m vs. pure nickel's 0.096 μΩ·m) generates more I²R heat at the same current, reducing pack efficiency. Pure nickel strip maintains consistent conductivity and corrosion resistance for the full service life of the pack.
Standard 18650 cell diameter is 18.0–18.5 mm. The most commonly used pitch is 19.0 mm, which centers each cell with approximately 0.5 mm clearance between adjacent cells. For packs using thicker cell holders or heat-dissipating spacers, 19.5 mm or 20.2 mm pitch may be required. If you are unsure, measure the center-to-center distance of your cell holder or welding jig — that measurement is the pitch you need.
The decision balances current-carrying capacity against weldability. 0.1 mm strip welds easily at lower energy (6–8 Ws) and is suitable for low-current packs under 5A continuous per cell. 0.15 mm is the industry standard for most 18650 consumer packs (e-bikes, power tools) carrying 10–20A. 0.2 mm provides the lowest resistance for high-drain applications above 20A but requires higher welding energy (10–14 Ws) and a welder capable of consistent penetration through the thicker material. DLX supplies all three; we recommend starting with 0.15 mm unless your current draw dictates otherwise.
Yes. With 2,000+ battery-specific die sets in our toolroom, we likely already have tooling for your format. For entirely new configurations, our in-house Sodick EDM shop can design, cut, and qualify a progressive die within 10 working days. There is a one-time tooling charge for custom dies, waived for orders exceeding 500 kg. Send your drawing or sample strip, and we will confirm feasibility and lead time within 24 hours.
Three controls: (1) Hydrogen annealing at 850–950°C softens the strip to a consistent 90–120 HB hardness — harder strip requires more welding energy and produces inconsistent nuggets; (2) Oxide-free bright surface means your welder electrodes contact pure nickel, not a resistive oxide layer that varies from spool to spool; (3) We pull-test sample welds from every 100 kg of production strip against an 18650 cell cap — peel force must exceed 15 N. If a batch fails, it does not ship.
