Nickel-hydrogen and nickel-metal-hydride batteries operate in an alkaline potassium hydroxide electrolyte at 6–8 M concentration. Under those conditions, a nickel-plated steel interconnect is not just suboptimal — it is a latent failure. The KOH electrolyte eventually penetrates any micro-crack in the plating layer, and the exposed steel corrodes. The strip delaminates. The pack loses continuity. DLX's narrow-body 15mm 2P nickel strip is made from solid Ni200 — 99.6% minimum nickel content — with no steel substrate. The entire cross-section resists alkaline attack because the entire cross-section is nickel. Stamped on progressive dies at 19.5mm pitch for standard 18650-based Ni-MH packs, each connector arrives hydrogen-annealed to a bright, oxide-free finish, ready to weld with no pre-cleaning required.

Ni-MH and Ni-H₂ cells use 6–8 M potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the electrolyte. This highly alkaline solution will penetrate any micro-crack in a plating layer — whether from a spot weld, a forming crease, or a handling scratch — and corrode the steel substrate beneath. Once corrosion starts, contact resistance increases, heat builds, and the pack degrades. Pure nickel at 99.6% minimum content has no substrate to expose. It resists KOH by forming a passive oxide layer that is chemically stable and nanometers thin — protecting the strip without adding measurable resistance. For a battery that must deliver 500–1,000 charge cycles, that is the difference between a reliable product and a warranty claim.
The 15mm width was developed based on feedback from Ni-MH pack manufacturers assembling 2P modules in sealed consumer housings — cordless phones, electric shavers, medical diagnostic devices — where the available connector bay is typically 16–18mm wide. At 15mm ±0.1mm, the strip fits without manual trimming, leaving adequate clearance for cell holder walls and avoiding short-circuit risk to adjacent metal components. If your housing requires a different width, we can slit to your specification with no tooling charge for standard tolerance orders.
Yes. 19.5mm is the most common center-to-center distance for 18650 Ni-MH cells in plastic or fiberboard carriers, accounting for the cell's nominal 18.3–18.5mm diameter plus carrier wall thickness. If your specific cell carrier uses a different pitch, we stock progressive dies at 18.5, 19.0, 20.2, and 20.5mm as well. Measure your carrier's center-to-center distance and we will match it exactly.
For most 2P consumer Ni-MH packs (cordless tools, backup power, portable medical), 0.15mm Ni200 is the recommended standard. It welds consistently at 8–12 Ws on standard capacitive welders and carries the 10–20A continuous discharge current typical of a 2P Ni-MH configuration. Use 0.1mm only for low-current applications under 5A continuous. Use 0.2mm if your pack experiences high-rate discharge above 20A or significant mechanical vibration.
DLX hydrogen-anneals every strip at 850–950°C in a continuous controlled-atmosphere furnace. This process chemically decomposes and volatilizes any residual organic compounds from the cold-rolling and slitting steps — compounds that would otherwise outgas inside a sealed Ni-MH pack during thermal cycling. We verify surface cleanliness with FTIR spectroscopy on random spool samples from each batch: the spectrum must show no detectable hydrocarbon peaks above baseline. This is a pass/fail gate; strips that fail are re-annealed or scrapped.
