Ordering a Grade Addition for an Indian Foundry

An Indian foundry buying a master alloy is buying an input to its own melt, so the purchase runs on a different document set from a part order. The grade comes first, because the grade fixes what the addition has to carry into the heat. Diameter, cut length and quantity follow. Those four items decide the price, the schedule and the packing before anything is cast.

K403 belongs to the cast grade series used for high-temperature alloy castings, and the grade name is the specification the foundry works to. It states which additions the heat is expected to receive and which elements have to be held low, so the two sides agree on the contents of a melt addition instead of the properties of a finished part.

Reading a K403 Enquiry

Four items settle the offer. The grade names the addition. The diameter sets the cast section. The cut length is taken from the charging practice in the foundry, so a bar that arrives at the length in use avoids a second cutting step on site. The quantity decides whether the lot is a trial cast or a scheduled production run, and the packing is matched to it.

Documents, Classification and the Destination Port

Each consignment travels with a mill test certificate stating the composition of the lot, a packing list carrying the case numbers, a commercial invoice and a bill of lading, with a certificate of origin added where the importer needs one. Bars and rods of nickel alloys sit under HS 7505.12. Jurisdictions differ on whether a master alloy is entered as a bar or as unwrought nickel alloy material, so the code applied to a particular lot is confirmed with the customs broker at the destination.

Charging Practice and Cut Length

The bar is cut to the length the foundry charges with, which may be a single bar or a shorter piece sized for the crucible or the charging bucket. Cut length is agreed when the order is placed, and the bundles and cases are marked so a consignment can be checked against the packing list at the port and again at the foundry gate.
