A junk sub is an effective while-drilling tool designed to capture heavy iron cuttings and metal debris that cannot be fully circulated out of the wellbore via normal mud circulation.
The cup features a larger outer diameter, creating a narrow annular gap against the wellbore. Meanwhile, the mandrel at the cup rim has a smaller diameter, resulting in a wider annular gap. This causes drilling fluid velocity to drop sharply at the cup opening and generates vortices, greatly reducing the fluid's cutting-carrying capacity. Heavy solid debris suspended in drilling fluid settles into the junk cup and is retrieved out of the hole during tripping operations.
