Compressed air, supplied by a high-capacity air compressor on the surface, drives the hammer to deliver rapid, high-impact blows to the bit while simultaneously rotating it and flushing cuttings out of the borehole. This combined percussion-rotation action allows for efficient fracturing and penetration of rock.
