It is a fundamental principle in both traditional and modern prepress workflows that the imaging process is only half complete upon exposure. Regardless of the specific plate technology—be it the conventional Photosensitive (PS) plates or the more advanced Computer-to-Plate (CTP) variants—the latent image created by the exposure unit must be chemically and physically developed to become a durable, print-ready printing plate. This critical development stage is performed by a dedicated machine known as a processor or a developer. The exposure itself, whether through a film negative in a vacuum frame for PS plates or a direct laser in a CTP platesetter, merely alters the chemical composition of the plate's coating in a specific pattern. This alteration, however, is not yet visible or robust. The processor's role is to render this pattern permanent. It achieves this through a meticulously controlled sequence of steps: developing, which dissolves the non-image areas; rinsing to halt development; applying a gum or protective coating to safeguard the hydrophilic (water-loving) non-image areas from oxidation and contamination; and finally, drying the plate thoroughly. Without this essential processing phase, the exposed plate remains sensitive, unstable, and entirely unfit for the demanding environment of a printing press, where it must withstand thousands of impressions under pressure, water, and ink. Therefore, the processor is not an optional accessory but an indispensable component in the platemaking chain, transforming a sensitized substrate into a functional, industrial-grade printing tool.
