What does LR2 (constant power / horsepower control) do?
LR2 is a hydro-mechanical constant power controller. The pump automatically reduces its displacement (flow) as system pressure rises, so that the product of Pressure × Flow ≈ constant (Power = const) — following a hyperbolic curve. This prevents the prime mover (electric motor / engine) from being overloaded. The starting point of power limiting is adjustable via a mechanical set screw on the LR2 controller. LR2 is purely mechanical/hydraulic — no electronics required.
How is LR2 different from DR (pressure control) or DFR (load-sensing)?
  • DR: Maintains constant pressure; pump strokes to near-zero when pressure setpoint is reached.
  • DFR / DFR1: Load-sensing + pressure limiting — adjusts flow to match demand.
  • LR2: Does NOT hold constant pressure; it limits total absorbed power. At low pressure the pump can deliver full flow; as pressure climbs the swash plate is mechanically forced back to keep P×Q below the set power limit. If system pressure is low, pump stays at full displacement.
Can I mount a second pump on the back?
Yes. The PPB code indicates through‑drive capability. You can flange-mount another A4VSO pump (same or smaller size) or a gear pump on the rear to form a tandem combination. N00 = no auxiliary gear pump pre-fitted, through-drive shaft is present.
What are critical installation points for LR2 pumps?
  • Case Drain: Plumb directly to tank, backpressure ≤ 1.5-2 bar. Never tee into main return.
  • Suction Line: Keep short & large-diameter; ensure absolute inlet pressure ≥ 0.8 bar to avoid cavitation. Use 100 µm suction strainer.
  • Rotation Check: "L" = counter‑clockwise when viewed from shaft end — verify prime mover direction before coupling.
  • LR2 Adjustment: Set the power-limiting screw so that P×Q at max pressure does not exceed motor rated power (allow ~10% margin for losses).
  • Bleed: Fill case and suction with oil and vent before first start-up.
Is a system relief valve still required with LR2?
Yes, absolutely. LR2 limits power but has no precise pressure cut-off function — it can allow pressure to rise above safe levels if flow demand drops to near zero and the control is misadjusted. A system safety relief valve (e.g. DB type, set above max working pressure + margin) is mandatory.
What oil cleanliness is required?
Maintain hydraulic oil at ISO 4406 18/16/13 (NAS 1638 Class 8 -9) minimum, using a return-line filter with β₁₀ ≥ 200 (10 µm nominal). Particle contamination is the leading cause of premature A4VSO pump failure.
What is the PPB25 port configuration?
B25 = SAE flange side ports with pressure port (B) and tank port (S) 90° apart, plus a second pressure port (B1) on the opposite side of B, normally plugged with a SAE flange blank. This allows cascade loading or superimposed signals in multi-pump systems.
