What is Nickel-Cadmium Battery?

The nickel-cadmium battery (Ni-Cd battery or NiCad battery) is a rechargeable battery that uses nickel oxide and the metal cadmium as electrodes.
It is a device that produces a direct current voltage based on a chemical reaction between related substances. In nickel-cadmium cells, the REDOX material is used as the base and a nickel layer and separator are used around it. Nickel-cadmium batteries have a voltage of about 1.2 V. When in series, usually 3 or 4 cells are packed together for a 3.6 to 4.8V output.

 

What is the Principle of Nickel-Cadmium Battery?

Graphite does not take part in chemical reactions. Its main role is to enhance electrical conductivity. The active substance on the negative plate is composed of cadmium oxide powder and iron oxide powder. Compared with other batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries have a moderate self-discharge rate, or the rate of charge loss when the battery is not in use. Nickel-cadmium batteries are charged if they are not fully discharged during use.

The maximum discharge rate of nickel-cadmium batteries varies by size. For ordinary aa sized batteries, the maximum discharge rate is about 1.8 amps; The D-size battery can discharge up to 3.5 amps.
