Reaction Equation: MgCO3 → Heat MgO + CO2


Principle

  • Buffered alkalinity – MgO hydrolyses slowly to Mg(OH)₂, releasing OH⁻ but capping pH at ≈10.3.

  • Thermal resistance – ionic crystal structure with very high melting point and low expansion.

  • Adsorption – porous surface (especially light grade) enables physical adsorption and chemical reaction with acids.

  • Cementitious reaction – reacts with MgCl₂ or MgSO₄ to form strong, fire‑resistant cements.
