The ePTFE waterproof vent for wearable delivery and insulin pump reservoirs is a precision, miniature sterile barrier and pressure management component engineered for the unique demands of ambulatory infusion devices. This vent integrates a medical-grade, hydrophobic ePTFE membrane with an ultra-compact adhesive or weldable carrier, designed for integration into the disposable insulin pump cartridge, patch pump reservoir, or wearable injector container. It provides a sterile airway that allows the reservoir to breathe as insulin or other liquid is delivered, preventing the vacuum that would stall the micropump and cause inaccurate dosing. Simultaneously, it maintains an absolute barrier against the water, sweat, and shower spray encountered during 24/7 body-worn use, while preventing the liquid from leaking out. This vent enables the small, discreet, waterproof wearable devices that provide insulin-dependent patients and those on continuous therapies with freedom and a normal quality of life.
Wearable insulin pumps and patch pumps deliver rapid-acting insulin continuously through a subcutaneous cannula. The insulin is stored in a small reservoir—typically 1.5 to 3.0 ml for a patch pump. A micropump or motor-driven plunger dispenses precise microliter doses. As insulin is delivered, the liquid volume in the reservoir decreases. Without a vent to allow air to enter, a vacuum develops that opposes the pump's action. The pump motor must work harder, battery life is reduced, and at higher vacuum levels, the pump may fail to deliver the commanded dose—a silent failure with immediate clinical consequences for the patient. The pump is worn on the body under clothing, against the skin, 24 hours a day. It is exposed to sweat, shower water, and occasional submersion. Any water ingress through the vent would contaminate the insulin reservoir and potentially denature the insulin protein. Any insulin leakage out of the vent would be a biohazard and would cause inaccurate dosing. The vent must be a perfect liquid barrier in both directions.
The ePTFE waterproof vent is integrated into the insulin reservoir or pump housing, typically over a small port that communicates with the reservoir headspace. As the pump dispenses insulin, ambient air is drawn through the 0.2-micron hydrophobic ePTFE membrane into the reservoir, instantly replacing the dispensed volume. The pump operates against ambient pressure, ensuring accurate dose delivery and long battery life. The membrane is hydrophobic and oleophobic—it prevents the liquid insulin (a solution containing preservatives like phenol and m-cresol, which can reduce surface tension) from leaking out, and it prevents external water, sweat, and shower spray from entering. The vent is biocompatible, low-extractable, and compatible with the insulin formulation for the labeled wear period (typically 3-7 days).

The vent is applied to the reservoir port during device manufacturing. The reservoir is filled with the liquid and sealed. As the patient wears the device and the pump dispenses microliter doses, the liquid volume in the reservoir gradually decreases. A slight negative pressure develops, which draws ambient air through the ePTFE membrane into the reservoir headspace, instantly equalizing pressure. The membrane's 0.2-micron pores physically block bacteria and liquid water in both directions. The oleophobic treatment prevents the insulin formulation's preservatives from wetting the membrane and causing slow leakage. During showering or swimming, external water is repelled by the hydrophobic membrane. The vent's small size and low profile fit within the compact dimensions of the wearable device.
