The medical device packaging vent is a universal, high-performance sterile barrier component engineered for the terminal sterilization of a vast range of medical devices. Cause

Medical device manufacturers must sterilize their products after packaging. The sterile barrier system—whether a rigid tray with a Tyvek lid, a flexible pouch, or a sealed device housing—must allow the sterilant to reach all surfaces of the device and then be fully evacuated. EtO gas, the most common industrial sterilant, must penetrate the packaging, contact the device, and then be removed through aeration to reduce toxic residues to safe levels. Solution

The weldable medical device packaging vent provides a single, validated component for multi-modality sterilization. The ePTFE membrane is chemically inert and thermally stable, withstanding EtO gas, steam at 134°C, vaporized H₂O₂, and high doses of gamma and e-beam radiation without any degradation of its physical or barrier properties. The thermoplastic carrier is material-matched to the common medical packaging polymers—PETG, PP, PE, PC—for a fast, strong, repeatable weld. During sterilization, the vent provides a high-airflow pathway for sterilant ingress and egress. After sterilization, the 0.2-micron pore structure provides a permanent sterile barrier. How It Works

The vent is welded into a dedicated port on the thermoformed tray, pouch film, or device housing during the packaging process. The packaged device enters the sterilization chamber. During EtO sterilization, the gas penetrates the package through the vent membrane, contacts the device, and after the dwell time, is evacuated back through the vent during the aeration phase. During steam sterilization, the vent allows air removal during the pre-vacuum pulses and steam penetration during the exposure phase, then filtered air ingress during drying. After the cycle, the vent membrane's 0.2-micron pores provide a continuous, passive sterile barrier. The package can be shipped globally, and the vent equalizes pressure during altitude changes in air freight, protecting the package seals.
