It provides a sterile, bacteria-retentive barrier that allows pressure equalization during thermal cycling and altitude changes, prevents vacuum formation during liquid aspiration by laboratory instruments, and maintains the reagent's calibrated concentration by preventing evaporative loss and contamination. The vent supports the accuracy and reproducibility of diagnostic test results by ensuring reagent integrity from the manufacturer's filling line to the final aspiration on the clinical analyzer.
In-vitro diagnostic reagents, calibrators, buffers, and control sera are packaged in plastic bottles that interface directly with automated clinical chemistry, immunoassay, and hematology analyzers. These instruments aspirate precise microliter volumes of reagent through a pipetting probe. As reagent is withdrawn, air must enter the bottle to replace the dispensed volume. Without sterile venting, a vacuum develops, causing inaccurate aspiration volumes, air bubbles in the fluid line, and eventually "reagent empty" alarms before the bottle is truly empty—resulting in wasted, expensive reagent and analyzer downtime. Many diagnostic reagents contain proteins, enzymes, or antibodies that are sensitive to oxidation and microbial contamination. An open vent or a non-sterile vent allows airborne bacteria, fungi, and particulates to enter, which can degrade the reagent, cause false-positive or false-negative test results, and generate biohazard concerns. These bottles must also withstand the thermal cycling of refrigerated storage (2-8°C) and room-temperature operation without the vent losing its seal or sterile barrier.
The adhesive sterile breathable vent provides a clean, secure, and easy-to-integrate sterile barrier over the bottle's vent port. The 0.2-micron ePTFE membrane is a recognized sterilizing-grade filter, providing a physical barrier that excludes bacteria, fungi, mold spores, and particulates. As the clinical analyzer aspirates reagent, sterile air is drawn through the membrane into the bottle, instantly equalizing pressure and ensuring accurate, bubble-free aspiration down to the last milliliter. The membrane's hydrophobic property prevents any reagent leakage, even with bottles containing surfactants or low-surface-tension buffer components. The adhesive vent is applied over a small aperture on the reagent bottle cap or closure during filling and capping. When the reagent bottle is placed on the clinical analyzer and the pipetting probe withdraws reagent, the slight negative pressure draws ambient air through the ePTFE membrane's 0.2-micron pores into the bottle headspace. The membrane allows air to flow freely while physically blocking all bacteria, fungal spores, and dust particles. When the bottle is stored in a refrigerator and then moved to the analyzer's room-temperature deck, the vent allows pressure equalization as the trapped air warms and expands.
