The weldable medical-grade vent for urine collection and suction canister lids is a specialized sterile barrier and pressure management component designed for closed-system medical fluid collection devices. This vent integrates a hydrophobic, bacteria-retentive ePTFE membrane with a durable medical-grade thermoplastic carrier, engineered for direct ultrasonic or heat-stake welding into the lids of urine drainage bags, surgical suction canisters, chest drainage units, and wound drainage reservoirs. It provides a sterile airway that allows air to exit as the canister fills with fluid, preventing the back-pressure that would stop fluid flow or cause the system to burst. Simultaneously, it provides a complete bacterial barrier that prevents environmental microorganisms from entering the collection system and causing ascending infections. The vent's absolute hydrophobic property prevents any leakage of collected fluid—urine, blood, serous fluid, or infectious aspirate—even if the canister is tipped or inverted, protecting healthcare workers and patients from biohazard exposure.
Closed-suction and gravity-drainage systems rely on a pressure differential to move fluid from the patient into the collection container. A surgical suction canister under vacuum draws blood, irrigation fluid, and surgical debris from the operative site. A urine drainage bag collects urine via gravity flow from a Foley catheter. A chest drainage unit removes air and fluid from the pleural space. In each system, as fluid accumulates in the container, the trapped air volume decreases, and pressure builds. Without a vent, this back-pressure will slow and eventually stop fluid flow—leading to incomplete bladder drainage and residual urine that promotes catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), or to surgical site fluid accumulation. A simple open vent would solve the pressure problem but would breach the closed system's sterility, allowing bacteria to enter and potentially migrate retrograde to the patient. An unprotected vent would also allow the biohazardous fluid to leak out if the container is knocked over—a common occurrence in busy clinical environments.
The weldable medical-grade vent provides a sterile, leak-proof airway that maintains the closed system's integrity. Welded into a port on the canister or drainage bag lid, the 0.2-micron hydrophobic ePTFE membrane allows air to exit freely as fluid enters. The container fills without back-pressure, maintaining consistent, uninterrupted drainage. The membrane's bacterial retention capability ensures that no microorganisms from the ambient environment can enter the collection system. The hydrophobic property—with a water entry pressure typically exceeding 100 kPa—guarantees that the collected biohazardous fluid cannot escape through the vent, even if the container is accidentally tipped, inverted, or compressed. The weldable carrier is material-matched to the lid polymer (typically PP or PE) for a permanent, leak-tight bond. The vent is validated for EtO or gamma sterilization and maintains its properties throughout the device's labeled shelf life.

The vent is welded into a port on the collection container lid during device manufacturing. As fluid drains into the container—whether by gravity, wall suction, or bulb vacuum—the rising fluid level displaces the air in the container. This displaced air passes through the ePTFE membrane's open pore structure and exits to the external environment. The container fills completely without generating back-pressure. The hydrophobic membrane prevents any liquid—urine, blood, or other bodily fluids—from penetrating the vent, even if the container is overfilled or inverted. The 0.2-micron pore size is a physical barrier to all bacteria, preventing environmental contamination of the closed drainage system. After use, the entire sealed container is disposed of as biohazardous waste, with no risk of spillage through the vent.
