The weldable breathable vent for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis solution bags is a sterile, bacteria-retentive pressure management component engineered for the large-volume, terminally sterilized bags used in renal replacement therapies. It integrates a medical-grade, low-extractable hydrophobic ePTFE membrane with a flexible, weldable PE or PP carrier designed for direct radio-frequency (RF) or heat welding into the multi-layer film of the dialysis solution bag. During the steam sterilization of the filled bag, the vent provides a protected pathway for the expanding steam and air to exit without rupturing the bag seals. During cooling and storage, it allows filtered air to enter, preventing the vacuum collapse of the bag. In clinical use, the vent maintains the sterility of the dialysis fluid as it is drained by gravity or pumped through the dialyzer, ensuring that the patient receives microbe-free fluid that is critical for preventing peritonitis in PD patients and bacteremia in HD patients.
Hemodialysis concentrates (acid and bicarbonate) and peritoneal dialysis solutions are packaged in large flexible bags, typically 2L to 6L, composed of multi-layer polyolefin films. After aseptic filling, these bags are sealed and steam-sterilized at 121°C. The heat causes the liquid and residual air inside the bag to expand dramatically. Without a vent, the internal pressure will burst the bag seals, resulting in product loss. During the cooling phase after sterilization, the steam condenses and the gases contract, creating a powerful vacuum that sucks the bag walls inward, causing permanent deformation and potentially separating the film layers (delamination). An unvented bag looks damaged and raises sterility concerns. In the dialysis clinic, the bag must drain completely without "glugging" or requiring unsterile air introduction. The vent must be an integral part of the bag, surviving sterilization and storage, and then functioning as a sterile airway during use.
The weldable breathable vent is RF-welded directly into the bag film as part of the bag manufacturing process. The PE or PP carrier fuses homogeneously with the bag's inner sealant layer. During steam sterilization, the ePTFE membrane allows the hot expanding air and steam to exit the bag, preventing over-pressurization. During the cooling and storage phase, sterile, filtered air is drawn back through the membrane, preventing vacuum and maintaining the bag's flat, professional appearance. In clinical use, the vent provides a sterile air intake that allows the dialysis solution to drain smoothly and completely from the bag into the dialyzer or the patient's peritoneal cavity. The 0.2-micron hydrophobic membrane ensures that no bacteria, fungi, or environmental contaminants can enter the sterile fluid path.

The vent is welded into the bag film at a dedicated port location, typically on the upper shoulder or header area. During bag filling, the vent is sealed. When the filled bag enters the steam sterilizer, the vent membrane allows the expanding air and steam to flow out as the temperature rises, preventing internal pressure buildup. During the cooling phase, as the steam condenses and the internal pressure drops, sterile air is drawn back in through the membrane, preventing bag collapse and maintaining the bag's shape. After sterilization, the vent becomes a permanent sterile barrier. In the dialysis unit or at the patient's bedside, the bag is hung and the giving set is attached. As fluid drains, air enters through the vent, ensuring complete emptying without vacuum.
