This PFAS-free waterproof sound transparent membrane is precision-cut to match your microphone port dimensions. It delivers high-fidelity acoustic transmission without introducing signal noise or distortion, all while blocking water and dust. The non-fluorinated polymer film is ultra-thin (as low as 0.03 mm) to minimize insertion loss, and can be supplied with perimeter adhesive rings for peel-and-stick assembly. It addresses the urgent need for PFAS-free materials in consumer electronics, hearing aids, and communication headsets where voice clarity and environmental protection are paramount.
MEMS microphones and electret capsules in phones, smart speakers, and wearables must have an open acoustic path. This makes them vulnerable to sweat, rain, and accidental immersion. Traditional protection uses PTFE mesh, which is PFAS-based. With upcoming bans and eco-label requirements, brands must switch to PFAS-free solutions. However, any change must not degrade microphone sensitivity, frequency response, or noise floor, or the user experience suffers.
We supply custom-cut PFAS-free sound transparent membranes with specialized micro-structure that delivers flat frequency response in the voice band (300–3400 Hz). The film’s hydrophobic surface repels water droplets, and the edges are laser-cut to precise tolerances for consistent acoustic port alignment. An optional pressure-sensitive adhesive ring allows direct attachment over the microphone hole without heat or ultrasonic welding. It meets IPX7 submersion tests when properly supported.

Acoustic pressure waves incident on the membrane cause it to oscillate with the air molecules, transmitting sound energy through the microporous film into the microphone cavity. Because the pores are much smaller than dust and water droplets, but comparable to the mean free path of air molecules, sound propagates with high efficiency. The membrane behaves as an acoustic compliance element, tuned to avoid resonance in audible range.
Provide the microphone port diameter and housing wall thickness. We will calculate the optimal membrane free diameter and advise on necessary support structure to resist water pressure. Select adhesive ring geometry that ensures a complete seal without covering acoustic ports. For high-pressure wash-down applications, specify a thicker membrane backed by a support mesh.
