High Light Cleanroom Die Cutting SystemBarrier Vent Die Cutting SystemMedical Barrier Vent Die Cutter
Product Overview

The cleanroom die cutting system for medical packaging sterile barrier vent manufacturing is a fully enclosed, ISO Class 7 or Class 8 compliant converting platform engineered to produce the sterile barrier vents, medical-grade gaskets, and pharmaceutical packaging components that must meet the most stringent cleanliness and regulatory requirements. This system is not merely a die cutting machine placed in a cleanroom; it is a purpose-designed cleanroom machine, constructed from stainless steel, anodized aluminum, and sealed polymer materials that do not shed particles. All drives and electronics are housed in positively pressurized, HEPA-filtered cabinets. The cutting process is fully enclosed, and the material path is protected by laminar airflow. Integrated particle counters monitor the environment continuously. The machine is designed for validated cGMP production, with a full documentation package supporting IQ/OQ/PQ. It produces the sterile barrier vents used in IV solution bottles, diagnostic reagent containers, surgical instrument trays, and pharmaceutical packaging, where a single particle contamination is a quality defect.

Cause

Medical and pharmaceutical packaging components must be manufactured in a cleanroom environment to control particulate and microbial contamination. However, conventional die cutting machines are not designed for cleanrooms. Their steel frames shed rust and paint particles; their open-frame construction allows dust accumulation in inaccessible areas; their pneumatic systems exhaust oil mist into the room; their motors and drives generate carbon brush dust; and their cooling fans circulate unfiltered air over hot electronics, creating convection currents that disturb the cleanroom's laminar airflow. Placing such a machine in a cleanroom inevitably results in a machine that constantly generates particles, fighting against the cleanroom's HVAC system and making it difficult to maintain the required ISO classification. For the medical packaging manufacturer, this means increased cleanroom cleaning costs, higher particle counts during operation, and a risk of contaminated product reaching the pharmaceutical customer.

Solution

The cleanroom die cutting system is engineered from the ground up for cleanroom operation. The machine frame is fabricated from 304 stainless steel, electro-polished to a mirror finish that resists particle adhesion and is easily cleaned. All structural joints are continuously welded and ground smooth to eliminate crevices where particles and microbes could accumulate. The die cutting platen, feed rollers, and other working surfaces are made from anodized aluminum or stainless steel. The entire cutting zone is enclosed behind clear polycarbonate safety doors that also serve as a physical barrier to contain any particles generated during the cutting process itself. All electrical cabinets, servo drives, and the PLC controller are located outside the cleanroom or in separate, positively pressurized, HEPA-filtered enclosures with sealed cable penetrations. The pneumatic system uses oil-free compressed air, and exhaust air is vented outside the cleanroom. The machine's base is designed for easy cleaning underneath, with minimal floor contact points. An integrated HEPA fan filter unit provides a continuous downward laminar airflow over the material path, actively sweeping any generated particles into the return air plenum. An optional particle counter provides real-time monitoring and documentation of the cleanroom environment around the machine.

How It Works

The machine operates in the designated cleanroom. All materials enter the cleanroom through a material airlock, having been wiped down or sterilized. The operator loads the material rolls onto the unwind, which is enclosed within the machine's clean zone. The material web is threaded through the cutting area, which is bathed in the downward laminar airflow from the integrated HEPA FFU. The die cutting process—whether flatbed or rotary—occurs within this clean zone. Any particulates generated are entrained in the downward airflow and carried to the return air plenum, not into the surrounding cleanroom. The finished parts, on the release liner, are re-wound and then removed from the cleanroom through a product airlock. The entire process is monitored, and environmental data is logged for batch record compliance.

How To Choose
  1. Determine the required cleanroom ISO classification (ISO 7 or 8) based on the product's regulatory requirements.

  2. Select the die cutting module (flatbed for flexibility and lower volume, rotary for high volume) that best matches the production needs.

  3. Define the material and finished product handling requirements within the cleanroom context.

  4. Specify the documentation and validation package needed for cGMP compliance: IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, material certificates, and software validation documentation.

  5. Plan the cleanroom layout to optimize the flow of raw materials, finished products, personnel, and waste in accordance with cleanroom design principles.

FAQ
  • Q: How is the machine cleaned between production runs?

A: The electropolished stainless steel surfaces are easily wiped down with cleanroom-approved disinfectants and wipers. The HEPA FFU maintains a positive pressure clean environment within the machine when not in production.

  • Q: Does the die cutting process itself generate particles that could contaminate the medical vents?

A: The cutting process generates minimal particles. The laminar airflow sweeps any particles generated away from the product path. The enclosed design contains them, and the HEPA filtration captures them.

  • Q: How is the machine's cleanroom performance validated?

A: During Operational Qualification (OQ), particle counts are measured at defined locations around and within the machine while it is operating, to demonstrate that the specified ISO classification is maintained.

  • Q: Can the machine be integrated into an existing cleanroom, or does it require a dedicated enclosure?

A: The machine is designed to be installed in an existing ISO 7 or 8 cleanroom. Its enclosed design and integrated FFU minimize its impact on the room's particle levels.

  • Q: Is the machine compatible with hydrogen peroxide vapor decontamination of the cleanroom?

A: The materials of construction—stainless steel, anodized aluminum, ePTFE, and selected polymers—are resistant to vaporized hydrogen peroxide at typical decontamination concentrations. We provide a detailed chemical compatibility list.
