Cause

The vent membranes for an EV battery pack are not small, standardized parts. They are often custom-designed for a specific vehicle platform. They can be very large—up to 300mm or more in diameter—to provide the high airflow needed for pressure equalization in the large internal volume of the pack. They often include multiple functional layers: a primary ePTFE waterproof breathable membrane, a welded or adhesive backing layer for attachment to the battery housing, a protective scrim for mechanical durability, and a specialized emergency degassing valve feature. Manufacturing these large, multi-layer, safety-critical components requires a machine that can handle the size, precisely laminate the layers without wrinkles or bubbles, die cut the large perimeter, and inspect every single part for pinholes, lamination defects, or dimensional errors. Solution

The custom die cutting and laminating machine is engineered in close collaboration with the customer's engineering team. The design process begins with a detailed analysis of the part design, the material stack, the required production rate, and the quality specifications. Our engineering team designs a machine that integrates the following custom modules: multi-position unwinds for each material layer with precision tension control suitable for wide, heavy rolls; a large-format laminating station with a heated or ambient nip that is wide enough to process the full material width; a custom die cutting module—either a large-bed servo flatbed press or a large-diameter rotary die cylinder—sized for the part; a custom stripping system to handle the heavy waste matrix; and an automated vision or leak-test inspection station. The entire machine is built on a rigid, precision frame and is designed for integration into an ISO Class 7 or 8 cleanroom if required. How It Works

The machine is designed specifically for the customer's part. A typical process flow: multiple rolls of the component materials are loaded onto the servo-driven unwinds. The materials are laminated together in precise registration in the wide laminating nip. The multi-layer web advances into the custom die cutting module. The large-area die cuts the vent membrane to the specified outer shape, and may also cut internal features or perforations. The waste skeleton is stripped and rewound. The finished parts proceed to the inspection station, where each part is checked for integrity. Accepted parts are stacked or sheeted; rejected parts are automatically diverted.
