Product Overview

The weldable ePTFE drum bung vent for 55-gallon steel and plastic drum pressure relief is a heavy-duty pressure management component engineered for the global drum packaging industry. This vent integrates a rugged, chemically resistant ePTFE waterproof breathable membrane into a robust weldable thermoplastic carrier, designed to be welded into the 2-inch or 3/4-inch bung closure of standard 55-gallon (200L) steel, HDPE, or composite drums. It provides continuous, maintenance-free pressure equalization during the entire drum lifecycle: filling, transport, storage, and dispensing. During hot filling, it allows expanding air to escape. During cooling, it allows filtered air to enter, preventing vacuum collapse. During transport across altitude and temperature extremes, it prevents dangerous pressure buildup that can bulge drum heads, blow out seals, or cause violent gushing when the bung is opened. The chemically inert membrane withstands the full spectrum of industrial chemicals, solvents, and petroleum products, making this vent the essential safety and integrity component for the world's most common bulk container.

Cause

The 55-gallon steel or plastic drum is the universal container of global industry, used to ship everything from lubricating oils and solvents to food ingredients and hazardous chemicals. Drums undergo extreme pressure stresses during their lifecycle. A drum filled with hot liquid and sealed will develop a powerful vacuum upon cooling, causing the steel head to collapse inward—a "paneling" failure that makes the drum unstackable and the contents impossible to pump. A drum containing a volatile solvent will build pressure when exposed to solar heat during transport, potentially blowing out the gasket or spraying product when opened. A drum shipped by air or over a mountain pass will experience significant atmospheric pressure changes. Without a vent, the drum is a pressure vessel, not just a container. A welded-in vent provides a permanent, reliable pressure relief pathway that protects the drum, its contents, and the people who handle it.

Solution

The weldable ePTFE drum bung vent is integrated directly into the drum closure during manufacturing. For plastic drums, the PP or PE carrier is hot-plate or ultrasonically welded into a port in the bung or the drum head, creating a permanent, leak-proof bond. For steel drums, the vent is welded into a plastic bung insert that is mechanically crimped or sealed into the steel drum head. The ePTFE membrane provides continuous, bidirectional airflow to equalize pressure during all phases of the drum's life. It is a complete liquid barrier, ensuring that no chemical leaks out even if the drum is accidentally tipped or stored on its side. The membrane resists chemical attack from the drum's contents and is oleophobic, preventing wetting by oils and solvents.

How It Works

The vent is welded into the drum bung or drum head. As the drum's internal pressure fluctuates with temperature, altitude, and liquid volume changes, air flows through the ePTFE membrane to equalize the pressure. Expanding hot air escapes; cooling air contracts and is replaced by filtered ambient air. The membrane's 0.2-0.5 micron pore structure blocks liquid, dust, and bacteria. The drum remains pressure-neutral, its structural integrity preserved, and its contents safely contained.
