Solution

The fundamental challenge for smartphone designers is maintaining microphone sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) while completely sealing the device against water and dust. Application

This vent is primarily applied to the microphone ports of smartphones, covering both bottom-firing voice mics and top/rear video recording mics. It is also used in companion devices such as smart glasses with voice pickup, tablets, and miniature voice recorders. In each case, the vent is die-cut to match the precise opening geometry and attached via automated pick-and-place equipment during assembly.

How It Works

The EPTFE membrane contains a node-and-fibril structure that creates interconnected micropores. The pore diameters are engineered to be roughly 0.2 to 0.5 microns—far smaller than the smallest water droplets but vastly larger than air molecules. Sound waves are pressure fluctuations that propagate by displacing air molecules; these fluctuations pass through the pores with minimal energy loss because the acoustic wavelength (e.g., 340 mm at 1 kHz) is gigantic relative to the pore size. Liquid water, having a strong surface tension of approximately 72 mN/m, cannot deform into the pores unless a critical breakthrough pressure is exceeded. Any water that contacts the surface simply beads up and rolls off, leaving the acoustic path dry and open.
