This EPTFE acoustic vent membrane is designed for ADAS blind spot detection sensors that use ultrasonic or millimeter-wave radar technologies to monitor adjacent lanes. The low-dielectric-constant EPTFE material introduces less than 0.5 dB of radar signal attenuation, making it virtually transparent to 24 GHz and 77 GHz radar waves while providing full environmental sealing. It shields the sensor’s radiating element from rain, snow, road spray, and car wash detergents that can cause signal absorption or reflection artifacts. The membrane’s superhydrophobic surface encourages water to bead and roll off, preventing the formation of a water film that could degrade radar performance. With an operating temperature range spanning from -40°C to +105°C and compliance to automotive thermal shock profiles, this vent ensures that blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert systems function reliably across all climates. It also resists de-icing chemicals such as calcium chloride and magnesium chloride, which are increasingly used on winter roads.

How It Works

Radar waves pass through the EPTFE membrane with minimal reflection because the material’s dielectric constant is close to that of air. Water, which has a high dielectric constant and strongly absorbs radar energy, is prevented from forming a sheet over the sensor face by the hydrophobic surface that causes it to bead and slide off. The fine pore structure blocks dust and salt particles that could cause surface roughness and scattering. The result is a consistently clean, dry sensor face that maintains factory-calibrated radar beam patterns over years of driving.

FAQ

Q1: Will heavy rain temporarily blind the sensor?

A: No. The hydrophobic surface ensures that water beads up and is quickly shed by airflow or gravity. Even in heavy rain, no continuous water film forms, so radar attenuation remains below 1 dB.

Q2: Does the membrane need to be calibrated out of the radar path?

A: The attenuation is consistent and can be accounted for in the sensor’s factory calibration. No dynamic compensation is needed.

Q3: Can it withstand automated car washes with rotating brushes?

A: Yes. The membrane is mounted recessed behind the sensor housing and protected from direct brush impact. The material’s abrasion resistance is sufficient for incidental brush contact, but the housing design provides the primary mechanical protection.
