The weldable waterproof breather vent for wiper motors and fluid pumps is a robust, high-durability pressure equalization component engineered for the demanding wet and high-vibration environment of automotive electromechanical actuators. It combines a tough, impact-resistant thermoplastic body with a high-performance ePTFE waterproof breathable membrane, designed for direct ultrasonic or heat-stake welding into the motor housing, pump body, or gear case. This vent continuously equalizes internal pressure generated by motor winding heat, bearing friction, and ambient temperature changes, preventing the vacuum that draws water, washer fluid, and road contaminants past shaft seals, O-rings, and connector gaskets. By maintaining a dry, pressure-neutral internal environment, it prevents bearing corrosion, brush/commutator degradation, and electrical short circuits in the motor windings—ensuring reliable operation of critical visibility and fluid delivery systems across the vehicle's full service life.
Wiper motors and fluid pumps operate in the wet-test zone of the vehicle. The wiper motor assembly lives in the plenum chamber at the base of the windshield, where rainwater, melted snow, and car wash water constantly flow. The windshield washer pump is submerged in the washer fluid reservoir, often mounted behind the bumper or in the wheel well where it's exposed to road spray. During operation, the electric motor windings generate heat—a wiper motor stalled against a heavy snow load can heat rapidly, and a washer pump running dry momentarily can spike in temperature. When the motor stops and cools, the internal air contracts sharply, creating a vacuum that pulls water, washer fluid, and contaminants past the output shaft seal and housing gaskets. Water inside the motor housing corrodes the armature bearings, degrades the carbon brushes and commutator, and eventually causes motor seizure or electrical short circuit. Washer fluid ingress into the pump motor leads to similar failures. The result is a non-functioning wiper system—a direct safety hazard—or an inoperative washer, which is an MOT/inspection failure in many jurisdictions.
The weldable breather vent provides a permanent, integrated breathing pathway for these wet-environment motors and pumps. The vent body is molded from a thermoplastic matched to the motor or pump housing material—typically PA6, PA66, or PP—and is welded directly into a dedicated port on the housing. The ePTFE membrane continuously equalizes internal pressure as the motor heats and cools, eliminating the vacuum-driven moisture ingress mechanism. The membrane's microporous structure is completely waterproof, blocking liquid water, washer fluid (which contains surfactants and alcohol), and road contaminants. The oleophobic treatment resists wetting by the various automotive fluids that splash around the motor location. The weldable format ensures the vent remains securely attached despite the intense vibration from motor operation and vehicle road inputs, with no adhesive to degrade or fasteners to loosen.

The vent is welded into a port on the motor or pump housing, typically positioned away from the output shaft to minimize direct water impingement. During motor operation, the energized windings and friction in the bearings generate heat that warms the internal air. The expanding air passes through the ePTFE membrane's nanopores and exits to the surrounding environment. When the motor stops and cools—perhaps after the vehicle is parked and rain continues to fall—the contracting internal air draws filtered ambient air back through the membrane. This prevents the vacuum that would otherwise pull water and contaminants past the shaft seal. The membrane physically blocks liquid water and washer fluid ingress, while allowing the motor to breathe. The welded bond ensures the vent remains perfectly sealed to the housing, with no secondary leak path, even under the sustained vibration of the operating motor and the shock loads of pothole impacts.
