Product Overview

This EPTFE acoustic vent is purpose-engineered for ultrasonic parking sensors embedded in vehicle bumpers, where accurate distance measurement and environmental survival are equally critical. The membrane protects the sensor’s piezoelectric transducer from direct water spray, road salt, mud, ice, and car wash chemicals while permitting ultrasonic pulses in the 40–58 kHz range to be transmitted and received with negligible signal loss. The thin film covers the sensor’s open port, forming a barrier that withstands high-pressure water jets meeting IP69K standards and resists stone impact at highway speeds. Its consistent acoustic impedance ensures detection accuracy within OEM tolerances, preventing false alarms or missed obstacles. The material is UV-stabilized for years of direct sun exposure and chemically inert against common automotive fluids including diesel, engine oil, and windshield washer solvent. Designed as a permanent component of the sensor assembly, the vent maintains its properties over the full vehicle lifetime without maintenance or cleaning.

Solution

Bumper-mounted ultrasonic sensors are exposed to the harshest road conditions. Water ingress and mud packing cause signal attenuation that degrades detection performance, often triggering false warnings or system failures. Traditional sensor protection relies on silicone potting or complex sealed housings that add cost and can degrade acoustic coupling. This EPTFE vent provides a dry, clean acoustic interface that repels water and mud instantly. It eliminates the need for bulky seals, simplifies sensor housing design, and increases manufacturing yield. How It Works

Ultrasonic transducers emit and receive high-frequency sound pulses. The EPTFE membrane’s microporous structure presents almost no obstacle to these waves because the pore size (sub-micron) is orders of magnitude smaller than the ultrasonic wavelength (~8 mm at 40 kHz). Sound passes through with minimal reflection or absorption. Water, mud, and salt solutions are blocked by surface tension across the hydrophobic pores. The high water entry pressure ensures that even pressure washer jets cannot force liquid into the sensor cavity. The vent also equalizes barometric pressure to prevent transducer diaphragm deflection over altitude changes.

FAQ

Q1: Will this vent reduce the maximum detection range of my parking sensors?

A: The round-trip attenuation of less than 2 dB equates to a range reduction of approximately 2–4 cm, well within the tolerances of typical parking sensor systems. The sensor ECU can be calibrated to compensate if required.

Q2: How does it handle winter conditions with ice and road salt?

A: Ice may form temporarily on the membrane surface, but the hydrophobic property limits ice adhesion and the vibration from the ultrasonic pulse helps dislodge it. Road salt does not chemically attack EPTFE. A rinse with water during car washing removes salt residue.

Q3: Is the vent a replaceable part or does it require sensor replacement when damaged?

A: The vent is integrated as a permanent component of the sensor module and is designed to last the vehicle’s lifespan. In the rare event of physical puncture, the entire sensor should be replaced as a unit.
