Product Overview

This EPTFE acoustic vent is dedicated to the external pedestrian warning speaker, also known as the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), found on electric and hybrid vehicles. It ensures that the mandated audible warning tones are broadcast at the legal sound level while protecting the speaker from road splash, mud, snow, and road salt. The vent membrane is engineered to handle the specific frequency band and sound pressure levels required by regulations such as UN R138 and FMVSS 141, with minimal insertion loss across the 500 Hz to 5 kHz range. Its high-temperature durability (up to 125°C continuous) allows it to be mounted near electric motor components or in the engine bay. The composite design, combining EPTFE with a protective stainless steel mesh, provides robust defense against stone strikes and high-pressure underbody washes. The vent is a critical enabler for EVs that must meet legal sound emission standards while being fully weatherproof.

Solution

Electric and hybrid vehicles are nearly silent at low speeds, posing a risk to pedestrians. External warning speakers are mandatory but are often located in wheel wells or behind grilles, where they are blasted by water, slush, and debris. A speaker failure results in non-compliance and potential recall. This EPTFE vent seals the speaker enclosure completely, preventing water and mud from degrading the driver or damping the cone. The solution eliminates the need for heavy metal grilles that can rust or rattle, offering a lightweight, corrosion-free alternative. It enables OEMs to place the AVAS speaker in the optimal acoustic position without compromising durability.

Application

How It Works

Sound from the speaker driver passes through the low-mass EPTFE layer and the open steel mesh, radiating to the outside world. Water and mud encounter the hydrophobic membrane and are blocked; droplets bead and run off the steel mesh. The steel provides protection against ice chunks and gravel impacts, while the EPTFE ensures the seal. The vent also equalizes pressure inside the speaker enclosure, preventing condensation and diaphragm biasing during rapid temperature changes.

FAQ

Q1: Does the vent change the required warning tones?

A: No. The insertion loss is flat across the AVAS band, so the frequency spectrum and volume of the warning sound remain compliant. Vehicle homologation testing can be passed with the vent installed.

Q2: How does it handle snow packing in the wheel well?

A: Snow can temporarily pack around the speaker grille area. The hydrophobic surface and speaker vibration help clear loose snow. A heating element may be used by the OEM for extreme conditions, but the vent material itself is unaffected.

Q3: Is this vent compatible with all EV sound generators?
