Ultrasonic probes are mainly classified as: straight probes, angle probes, probes with curvature, focusing probes, surface wave probes, immersion probes, dual-crystal probes, thickness gauge probes, high-temperature probes, etc. Ultrasonic angle probes are primarily used for transverse wave flaw detection to inspect weld defects such as porosity, cracks, and slag.
Ultrasonic angle probes mainly consist of a wedge, piezoelectric crystal, sound-absorbing material, housing, and socket. Ultrasonic wave transmission/reception is accomplished by the piezoelectric crystal; the wedge's function is to achieve wave mode conversion. When the incident angle (α) is between the first and second critical angles, according to the law of refraction of ultrasound at different acoustic impedance interfaces, only transverse waves exist in the workpiece; the sound-absorbing material absorbs noise emanating from the back of the crystal and around the wedge; the housing provides support, protection, and electromagnetic shielding; the socket is the electrical signal interface, connected to the instrument via the probe cable. The magnitude of the angle probe's refraction angle is indicated by the K value. The K-value for inspecting steel workpieces is indicated on the probe model. K = tg(Θ), which is the tangent of the refraction angle. Commonly used K-values include 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0. Using a K-value to name the probe makes defect location calculations easier. The sound beam of an angle probe is inclined to the probe surface, therefore it can be used to detect areas that a straight sound beam cannot reach, or areas where there is an angle between the defect direction and the detection surface.
