A camshaft is a shaft that contains a row of pointed cams, in order to convert rotational motion to reciprocating motion. Camshafts are used in piston engines (to operate the intake and exhaust valves),[1][2] mechanically controlled ignition systems and early electric motor speed controllers.
Camshafts in piston engines are usually made from steel or cast iron, and the shape of the cams greatly affects the engine's characteristics.
What happens when camshaft fails?
Cylinder Misfire: damaged camshafts are likely to cause cylinder misfires because the valves which are controlled by the defective lobes won't open and close in time. This will prevent the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber from igniting properly which will lead to poor ignition.
The camshaft is a mechanical component of an internal combustion engine. It opens and closes the inlet and exhaust valves of the engine at the right time, with the exact stroke and in a precisely defined sequence. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft by way of gearwheels, a toothed belt or a timing chain.
