Design: Rocker arms are typically made of durable materials, such as steel or cast iron, to withstand the mechanical stresses and heat generated in the engine. They have a distinctive elongated shape with a pivot point in the center.

Pivot Point: The pivot point, also known as the rocker arm fulcrum, is where the rocker arm rotates. This point is mounted on a shaft or pivot stud that is fixed in the cylinder head.

Camshaft Interaction: On one end of the rocker arm, it makes contact with a lobe on the engine's camshaft. As the camshaft rotates, the cam lobe pushes against the rocker arm, causing it to pivot around the fulcrum.

Valve Actuation: The other end of the rocker arm is equipped with a pad or roller that contacts the valve stem. When the rocker arm pivots in response to the camshaft's action, it pushes or pulls on the valve stem, opening or closing the valve. This action is precisely timed to coordinate with the engine's operation.

Lubrication: To reduce friction and wear, rocker arms are typically lubricated. Many Cummins engines use an oil supply to ensure proper lubrication of the rocker arms and the valve train.

Adjustment: In some engines, including certain Cummins models, rocker arms may be adjustable. This means that they can be adjusted to ensure the proper clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem. This is crucial for maintaining proper valve timing and minimizing valve train noise.
