Industrial ferrovanadium FeV 78, presented as silver‑grey irregular lumps, is a specialized alloy widely employed to enhance cast iron through nodularization and strengthening processes. With a vanadium concentration near 78%, this grade delivers a potent combination of carbide‑forming ability and grain‑refining influence, making it invaluable in the production of ductile or spheroidal graphite iron. The silver‑grey coloration reflects its clean surface and relatively low oxide layer, indicating careful processing and storage to preserve reactivity.
In cast iron metallurgy, achieving a nodular graphite structure is critical for improving tensile strength, elongation, and impact toughness. While magnesium or cerium treatments primarily induce spheroidization, vanadium acts as a secondary enhancer. It promotes finer eutectic cell sizes and stabilizes the graphite nodules by restricting unwanted flake formation. Furthermore, vanadium’s strong affinity for carbon produces finely dispersed vanadium carbides (VC) within the matrix, reinforcing the iron and raising its wear resistance and high‑temperature stability. This is particularly beneficial for components such as cylinder liners, brake discs, and heavy‑duty gears that must withstand both mechanical stress and thermal cycling.
FeV 78 lumps are sized for convenient manual or mechanical charging into ladles or furnace baths. Their relatively high density ensures minimal dusting and straightforward handling in foundry environments. Because of the alloy’s modest impurity content, it avoids introducing detrimental elements that could impair castability or promote shrinkage defects.
