Key Metallurgical Roles in Spring & Valve Steel

Spring steel requires exceptional elasticity, fatigue resistance, and yield strength to withstand repeated stress cycles, while valve steel demands high-temperature strength, wear resistance, and resistance to creep for applications in engines and industrial valves. Vanadium, a potent carbide-forming element, addresses these needs through three primary mechanisms:

  1. Carbide Refinement: Vanadium reacts with carbon in molten steel to form fine, uniformly distributed vanadium carbides (VC). These carbides act as barriers to dislocation movement, significantly increasing hardness and strength without excessive brittleness. In spring steel, this translates to improved fatigue life; in valve steel, it enhances wear resistance under cyclic loading.

  2. Grain Refinement: During solidification, vanadium suppresses austenite grain growth, resulting in a finer ferrite-pearlite or martensitic microstructure.   • Controlled Impurities: Silver-grey lumps typically have low levels of sulfur, phosphorus, and other tramp elements, minimizing adverse effects on steel cleanliness and performance.
