The term "types" can be ambiguous, but it generally refers to the three main commercial forms or product categories of manganese:
Manganese Ore: This is the raw material mined from the earth. It is primarily categorized by its percentage of contained manganese and its impurities. The main ore mineral is Pyrolusite (MnO₂). Ores are often upgraded to sinter or nodules for use in ferroalloy production.
Ferromanganese (FeMn): This is an alloy of iron and manganese (typically 65-80% Mn) produced by smelting manganese ore with iron ore in a blast furnace or electric arc furnace. It is the most common and cost-effective way to introduce manganese into steel.
Electrolytic Manganese Metal (EMM): This is high-purity manganese (>99.7%) produced through an electrolysis process. It is brittle and comes in the form of flakes or sometimes powder. It is used when high purity is required, such as in specialty aluminum alloys, advanced high-strength steel, and particularly in the battery industry.
