TZM alloys and TIG welding
TIG welding is called tungsten inert gas shielded welding. It is a welding method that usually uses tungsten electrode as the electrode material and argon gas as the protective gas. In TIG welding, manufacturers usually use thoriated tungsten electrodes, cerium tungsten electrodes and zirconium tungsten electrodes as electrode materials.

According to the type of power source, TIG welding can be divided into three types: DC TIG welding, AC TIG welding and pulse TIG welding. According to the operating method, TIG welding can be divided into: manual welding, automatic welding, and semi-automatic welding, among which GTAW is the most widely used.

Using TIG welding to weld TZM alloy can effectively prevent the intrusion of oxygen and nitrogen during the welding process. The study found that the optimal process parameters for TIG welding of TZM alloy are: welding current: 210A, arc voltage 25V, welding speed: 4mm/s, argon gas flow: 8~12L/min. Analysis of the microstructure of the TZM alloy welded joint found that the grains in the welding area were coarse and contained a small number of black spots, but the weld structure was dense and there were certain cracks.

In addition, the coarse-grained zone and transition zone are affected by thermal effects, which essentially eliminates the plate-like grain structure of the alloy, and recrystallizes into coarse equiaxed grains, while the original base material still maintains the lamellar crystal and braided structure. The elimination of the plate-like grain structure weakens the strength of TZM alloys.
