Ferro silicon Description

Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon, containing 15% to 95% silicon. It is used for deoxidizing molten steel and manufacturing silicon steel and high-silicon cast iron.

Ferrosilicon is produced by mixing coke with iron to reduce the amount of silica or sand. Typical sources of iron are grinding debris, or from recycled scrap iron.

Ferrosilicon with silicon weight contents up to about 15% is produced in blast furnaces lined with acid refractory bricks, while higher weight contents are produced in electric arc furnaces.

Common grades on the market are ferrosilicon with 45%, 65%, 70% and 75% silicon content. The remainder is iron, and about 2% is made up of other elements such as aluminum and calcium.

1. In the steel making field, Ferrosilicon is used as deoxidizer and alloying agent to precipit and diffuse deoxidation. Adding a certain amount silicon of fe-si to the steel can obviously improve the strength, hardness, elasticity and permeability of steel.
2. In the iron casting,ferrosilicon is used as ball mile agent and alloying agent, especially in the nodular iron casting, Adding ferrosilicon to cast iron,it can prevent the formation of carbide and promote the precipitation of graphite and the nodulizing.then the mechanical capacity can be the same of steel's.
3. High-silicon ferrosilicon can be used for the production of the low-carbon reductant in ferro alloy industry.
