Metallic silicon, also known as industrial silicon or crystalline silicon, is commonly produced in an electric furnace by the reduction of silicon dioxide with carbon. Its main uses are as an additive in non-ferrous alloys and as a starting material for the production of semiconductor silicon and organic silicon.
In China, metallic silicon is typically classified according to the content of its three main impurities: iron, aluminum, and calcium. Depending on the percentage content of these elements in metallic silicon, it can be divided into different grades such as 553, 441, 411, 421, 3303, 3305, 2202, 2502, 1501, and 1101.
Metallic Silicon Production Process
The production of metallic silicon employs the carbothermal method, which involves smelting quartzite and carbonaceous reducing agents in an arc furnace. The silicon produced by this method has a purity of 97% to 98%, which is generally suitable for metallurgical purposes. If a higher grade of silicon is required, further refining to remove impurities is necessary to achieve a purity of 99.7% to 99.8%.
The smelting of metallic silicon from quartz sand includes several steps: the preparation of quartz sand blocks, the preparation of furnace charges, and the smelting process in an arc furnace.
Generally, high-quality quartz sand is directly used for the production of high-grade quartz glass products, or even processed into gemstone-level products such as quartz crystals and tourmaline. Quartz sand of slightly lower grade but with larger reserves, easier mining conditions, and cheaper surrounding electricity is suitable for the production of metallic silicon.
Currently, the production process of metallic silicon in China using the carbothermal method generally involves using quartzite as the raw material, with petroleum coke, charcoal, wood chips, and low-ash coal as reducing agents. The smelting takes place in an electric arc furnace at high temperatures to reduce metallic silicon from the quartzite. This is a slag-free smelting process with a buried arc at high temperatures.
