The optical transceiver module consists of optoelectronic devices, functional circuits and optical interfaces. The optoelectronic devices include two parts of transmission and reception.

The transmitting part is: input electronic signal with a certain of bit rate, processed by drive chip and drive the semiconductor laser (LD) or light emitting diode (LED) and emits optical modulation signal with corresponding speed rate , with the internal automatic control circuit of optical power, the output optical signal power will keep stable.

The receiving part is: optical signal with certain bit rate is input to the fiber optic transceiver and is converted from the optical detection diode to the electrical signal. Output electrical signal with of corresponding code rate after the preamplifier, and the output signal is generally PECL/CML level. At the same time, a warning LOS signal will be output when the input optical power is less than a certain value.

The main factors affecting the transmitting and receiving functions of the optical transceiver module are as follows:

Transmission insertion loss (Pass, ILP): the energy loss of the transmission wavelength when the optical signal passes through the fiber optic transceiver;

Reflect (ILR): the energy loss of the reflected wavelength when the optical signal passes through the fiber transceiver.

Polarization dependent loss (Polarization, PDL): the variation brings change of the insertion loss under different polarization states is called polarization dependent loss.

Temperature dependent loss (Temperature, TDL): the variation brings change of insertion loss caused by different temperatures is called the temperature dependent loss.

The insertion loss of optical signal: the energy of optical signal decreases gradually during transmission. Especially when inserting various passive optical transceivers, the fiber optic transceiver will consume part of the energy. The power meter shows how much of this energy is lost. We generally call it "insertion loss", referred to as "IL".

Return loss (RL): a small portion of the optical signal is returned from the original path due to scattering and other reasons in fiber optic transceiver. The return loss is used to describe the intensity of this return optical signal. If the optical signal of this back transmission is too large, it may affect the normal work of the light source, so the smaller the returned optical signal, the better to the optical transceiver. The greater the value of the index, the smaller the optical signal returned.

Directivity (DIR): the optical signal within the transmission bandwidth is incident from the transmission port of the fiber optic transceiver, and the loss of optical signal detected at the reflective port of the fiber module is directivity. The principle is similar to the return loss. The larger the value, the smaller the interference of optical signal, and the fiber optic transceiver is more stable.
