As one of the most important passive optical devices, fiber optic patch cord require lower insertion loss and higher return loss in order to improve the reliability of optical fiber transmission systems. To evaluate the quality of optical fiber patch cord, it is necessary to measure the shape parameters of the end face of ferrule after lapping and polishing, including three important parameters, such as the radius of curvature, the offset of the vertex and the dent of the fiber core. Only when the shape parameter of the end surface is ensured within a certain range can the optical fiber keep good physical contact; in addition, the metamorphic layer on the end face of optical fiber should be removed as far as possible, and check if there are scratches or other fouling on the end face of optical fiber. Finally, the performance requirement of low insertion loss and high return loss should be satisfied. Therefore, the lapping and polishing process of optical fiber optic jumper is very important to improve its optical performance.

Fiber polishing process is an integrated result of many single abrasive grains on the surface of the abrasive paper grinding on the surface of the fiber.

The four steps polishing methods: remove glue - rough grinding - semi fine grinding - fine grinding - polishing

1, for the optical fiber patch cord with ceramic sleeve, such as FC, SC, ST, LC type fiber connector, mainly using diamond series of grinding films for grinding, and use ADS for polishing.

2, the optical fiber patch cord with APC ceramic ferrule needs large size diamond lapping paper to open bevel and then grinds with D9-D1-ADS polishing films.

3, for the optical fiber jumper with plastic ferrule, such as MT-RJ type fiber connector, the grinding process is: SC30/15-SC9-SC6-SC3-SC1, polishing with black + cerium oxide grinding fluid; use glass pad for polishing.

And please pay attention to the below points during grinding and polishing:

1, in the process of grinding and polishing, each step should use pure water and dust-free wipe paper to clean the end of the ferrule;

2, generally, water is used as grinding medium during polishing;

3, equal height is required during positioning and polishing. Otherwise, the length will be different. When positioning, the polishing plate and ferrule must be kept vertical, otherwise the convex spherical offset is not good (core deviation);

4, the polishing parameters are affected by different ferrule from different manufacturers;

5, the abrasive paper used for grinding should be harder than the workpiece, while the polishing film should be soft than the workpiece.
