An optical fiber itself has independent optical signal transmission function, that is to say, in an ideal environment, only one fiber, plus terminal devices at both ends, it can constitute an optical communication system. Therefore, the material and structure of optical fiber determine its optical transmission performance. However, since the mechanical and physical properties of the fiber and the environmental performance is relatively poor, fiber has to be made into fiber cable through many processes to enhance mechanical and physical properties and environmental performance in order to meet the demand of actual use.
As far as transmission performance is concerned, single-mode transmission systems are better than multi-mode transmission systems. But in the current optical communication system, not only the performance, but also the cost of the system should be taken into account. From the cost point of view, single-mode fiber optic cable is cheaper than multimode fiber cable, but for optical devices, such as light source, optical receiver, fiber connector and so on, multi-mode type is much cheaper than single mode type. Therefore, there are different emphases in different application fields. For example, in long-distance trunk line system, large amount of fiber optic cable is used and higher transmission performance is required, so single mode transmission system is always adopted. Being close to the user terminal, such as building integrated cabling systems, there are larger amount optical devices required, and the transmission performance of multimode transmission system is enough for needs of end users, so multi mode transmission system is chosen.
By the standard use, long-distance trunk system always uses ITU/T G65x series standards and generic cabling system adopts ISO 11801 standard.
