INTENDED USES:
Previously painted exterior surfaces and new wood. Properly prepared exterior aluminum, concrete, metal, masonry and wood surfaces.
Cleaning
To avoid cleaning out brushes and rollers in the middle of a job using alkyd paints, wrap them in aluminum foil (to prevent the solvent from evaporating) overnight.
When you've finished painting
Brushes should be stored flat or on their handles. Standing them on their ends will bend the bristles and spoil them.To reseal a can of paint so that it is airtight, wipe the rim of the can clean, replace the lid, place a block of wood over the top and tap it down with a hammer. Then quickly invert the securely lidded can to form an airtight seal which will help prevent skinning.
Handling paint and chemicals
Only buy as much paint as you need for the job in hand. If you do need to store it, out of the reach of children.Don't throw away your white spirit after use. Allow it to stand and the sediment will fall to the bottom. Then pour off the clean spirit and re-use it. Don't pour paint or white spirit down the drain as the chemicals they contain can disperse and contaminate the water supply.
Health and Safety
Even though paint products are safe and easy to use these days, many contain chemicals that can be harmful if incorrectly used. A few simple precautions will ensure that good results are obtained safely.
Always read the label and instructions for the use of paints, thinners and other decorating materials before you begin work.
Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin and always wear suitable eye protection when decorating.
Avoid the inhalation of dust. Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding.
When applying solvent-based paints you should use them in well ventilated areas. Ensure maximum ventilation during both application and drying. Do not use on large surface areas inside such as walls and ceilings (always use Water-Based paints for this), or in confined spaces.
Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead.

Storage:
Paints should be stored in dry, shaded conditions and must be protected from freezing at all times during storage and transport. Frozen material shall be discarded, and never thawed and applied. The recommended storage temperature is between 5ºC (41ºF) and 30ºC (86ºF). Containers should remain sealed and unopened until needed and used in date order. Shelf life may be reduced at higher storage temperatures.

Exterior Varnish Over Stain
It is not advisable to varnish over large exterior stained surfaces such as siding and decks. Although the finish may be attractive initially, the varnish must be recoated after a maximum of two years exposure. If recoating of the varnish is not done before it starts showing signs of breakdown, stripping will be necessary, which will remove the varnish and some of the stain. The porosity of the wood has now been effected by penetration of resin from the stain and varnish, so getting a uniform appearance with a transparent or semitransparent stain is very difficult. Uneven sheen (flashing) of solid hide stains can also result.
Essential tools and preparation advice to Maintain Previously Painted Exterior Walls
If the surface is very bad then it may be necessary to wash some of it down first with a detergent solution to remove dirt, grease etc. Rinse off with clean water and allow too dry.
Carefully scrape back to a firm edge all areas of poorly adhering or defective coatings and rub down thoroughly to "key and feather" broken edges of existing coatings.
New or sound bare surfaces should be sealed with a Primer first (smooth or textured) to ensure good adhesion of the finishing coat(s).
Shake Or Stir?
There is a misconception that varnishes should not be shaken or stirred. Shaking varnish causes air bubbles in the can which might take overnight to dissipate. Although there is little in gloss varnishes to settle, flat, satin, and semigloss varnishes contain pigment which may settle out. Using a low-gloss varnish without at least stirring will usually cause a variation in gloss (from glossy to flat) as you get lower in the container.
