Forsterite Sand Manufacturer High Temperature Refractory Sand Supplier Wholesale
Forsterite sand (also known as magnesium olivine sand or olivine sand) is a naturally occurring magnesium silicate mineral with the chemical formula Mg₂SiO₄. As the magnesium-rich end-member of the olivine group, forsterite sand is distinguished by its exceptional refractoriness, low thermal expansion, and outstanding resistance to chemical corrosion from molten metals and basic slags. With a melting point exceeding 1760°C and a Mohs hardness of 6–7, forsterite sand has become an indispensable raw material in steelmaking, foundry casting, and refractory manufacturing worldwide.
Applications of Forsterite Sand
Forsterite sand is also widely used as tundish filler sand, ladle well filler sand, and nozzle filling sand in continuous casting operations, where consistent performance and minimal downtime are essential for production efficiency.
In ferrous and non-ferrous metal foundries, forsterite sand (olivine sand) serves as a high-performance molding and core sand. Its low thermal expansion coefficient minimizes casting defects such as veining, scabbing, and hot tearing — common problems associated with silica sand in manganese steel and high-alloy steel casting. The high heat absorption capacity of forsterite sand promotes faster solidification, resulting in improved dimensional accuracy and a smoother surface finish on castings.
