Product information


EN 13823, commonly referred to as the Single Burning Item (SBI) test, is a pivotal European standard (EN 13823:2020+A1:2022) within the Euroclass fire classification system (EN 13501-1), designed to evaluate the fire reaction performance of building products, excluding floorings. It measures critical parameters like heat release rate, smoke production, and flame spread under a simulated single burning item scenario. Related standards, such as EN ISO 1182, EN ISO 1716, and EN ISO 11925-2, support classifications from A1 to D, with equivalents like GB/T 20284-2006 in China, NF P 92-501 in France, and ASTM E1354 in the USA. The SBI test applies to a wide range of construction products, including gypsum boards, wood panels, mineral wool insulation, polyurethane foam boards, fire-retardant paints, external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), aluminum composite panels, and pipe insulation sleeves. These products, used in walls, ceilings, facades, and insulation, are tested in their end-use configuration to ensure compliance with stringent fire safety requirements, making EN 13823 essential for global building material safety standards.

EN 13823:2020+A1:2022: Reaction to fire tests for building products — Building products excluding floorings exposed to the thermal attack by a single burning item (SBI).



Test product range


1. Wall and ceiling linings: gypsum boards, wood panels, metal composite panels, plastic composite panels, fiber cement boards, ceramic tiles.


2. Insulation materials: mineral wool insulation boards, polystyrene foam insulation, polyurethane foam boards, glass fiber insulation, rock wool boards.


3. Coatings and surface treatments: fire-retardant paints, varnishes, wallpapers, decorative films, powder coatings.


4. Facade and exterior systems: external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), curtain wall panels, aluminum composite panels, high-density polyethylene panels.


5. Duct and Linear Products: Pipe insulation sleeves, cable trunking covers, ventilation duct linings.


6. Other Composite Products: Sandwich panels, honeycomb panels, laminates, PVC sheets, and acrylic sheets.



Design Principle:


A test specimen, consisting of two vertical wings at right angles, is exposed to a flame generated by a main burner at the bottom of the right angle. The flame is generated by the combustion of propane gas, which passes through a sandbox burner and produces a heat output of (30.7 ± 2.0) kW. The combustion performance of the test specimen is evaluated over a 20-minute test. Performance parameters include heat release, smoke production, lateral flame spread, and combustion droplets and particulate matter.



Product Features:


1. The combustion chamber is a monolithic stainless steel unit, offering ease of movement, an elegant appearance, and superior quality, ensuring a long service life.


2. The exhaust system's insulated exhaust duct, hood, and collector feature double-layer insulation to ensure accurate data collection.


3. All oxygen and carbon dioxide sensors are imported, ensuring high data accuracy and test results.


4. The flue is constructed of genuine cast iron, ensuring the longevity of the equipment. The chimney's interior is a double-layer structure with internal insulation, fully meeting standard requirements.


5. The combustion control system uses software to automatically control the on/off switching of the solenoid valves, and the main and auxiliary burners are automatically ignited, ensuring safe operation of the equipment.


6. The automatic flue gas treatment function allows flue gas to be directly fed from the exhaust system into the flue gas treatment system during the test, significantly reducing the atmospheric pollution caused by single-unit combustion tests.


7. Control System: The control core utilizes an imported Omron PLC and integrated temperature expansion module, effectively reducing interference and improving equipment stability. The output uses Schneider's latest solid-state contactless switching devices, which offer high reliability, long life, low noise, fast switching speed, and strong anti-interference capabilities, extending the service life and safety of the equipment.


8. The data interface utilizes standard RS-232 serial communication for synchronous test data collection. This ensures stable data, high reliability, and ease of use. Data transmission is highly resistant to interference.


9. The software is powerful and holds a national intellectual property patent. It can display 11 data curves, providing a clear overview of experimental data. The software uses a Visual Basic 6.0 programming interface, offering powerful Internet application development capabilities. Supports applications using Dynamic HTML (DHTML); it is hardware-independent and can run normally on any computer with a standard interface.

13. Alarm: Alarm when flue gas duct temperature exceeds 400°C;


14. Specimen Dimensions: Angle-type specimens have two wings, a long wing and a short wing. The maximum specimen thickness is 200 mm. The specimen dimensions are as follows: short wing: (495 ± 5) mm × (1500 ± 5) mm; long wing: (1000 ± 5) mm × (1500 ± 5) mm. Unless otherwise specified in the product specifications, if the specimen thickness exceeds 200 mm, the non-fire-exposed surface of the specimen shall be cut away to a thickness of 2000 - 10 mm. Draw two horizontal lines on the fire-exposed surface of the specimen's long wing at the edge farthest from the angle of the specimen, at heights of (500 ± 3) mm and (1000 ± 3) mm from the bottom edge of the specimen, respectively, to observe the lateral spread of flame at these two heights. The width of the drawn line should be ≤ 3mm.


15. Sample conditioning: Temperature (21-25°C), Humidity (45-55% RH).


16. Distance from the long wing of the specimen to the opposite side: 2100mm.
