The BS 6307 / BS 4790 Carpet Flammability Tester is a dedicated hot metal nut test apparatus designed to evaluate the flammability performance of textile floor coverings. It determines the effect of a small ignition source on carpets and rugs by applying a heated metal nut to the specimen surface and measuring the resulting charred area and spread of flame.
A standard metal nut is heated to the specified test temperature and placed onto the surface of the carpet specimen in a draught-free environment. The specimen is observed for ignition, flame spread, and afterglow. After the test, the maximum damaged (charred) distance is measured to classify the flammability performance of the floor covering.
