A specimen is mounted in either the horizontal or vertical position according to the selected test method. A standardized ignition source is applied to the sample for a defined period, and the tester records the flame spread, burning duration, and combustibility characteristics. The resulting data allow operators to classify material flammability performance and verify conformity with ASTM D1230 requirements.
