The activation method differs between the two system types because of their distinct components.

When a fire occurs in the room, smoke detectors quickly detect the smoke and send a signal to the control panel. Upon receiving the signal, the control panel triggers an alarm bell to alert occupants to evacuate the room or building. If the control panel does not receive a signal from a heat detector within a few seconds, users should investigate whether a fire is actually present. If the control panel does receive a signal from a heat detector, the fire suppression system activates quickly after a short delay. When the system begins discharging, the indicator discharge light illuminates.

The temperature-based FM200 fire suppression system activates automatically in response to high temperature, so it requires no electrical components. When a fire occurs, once the temperature reaches the activation threshold, the temperature sensor breaks and releases the fire suppression agent.
