HFC-227ea (also known as FM200) is an odorless, colorless halocarbon existing in a gaseous state. It is primarily used in two key applications: as a clean agent in fire suppression systems, and in pharmaceutical metered dose inhalers such as those used for dispensing asthma medication.
As a clean agent in fire suppression systems, HFC-227ea is effective against Class B, Class C, and electrical fires. Extinguishing a fire requires a concentration between 6.25% and 9% in an occupied space without a mandated egress time, or up to 10.5% for a limited duration — as the NOAEL level indicates that FM200 becomes toxic once concentration reaches 10.5%.
Because it contains no chlorine or bromine atoms, HFC-227ea does not harm the ozone layer, with an ODP of 0%. Its atmospheric lifetime ranges between 31 and 42 years.
