The finish of a melamine faced panel decides how the furniture reads in a room, how it wears, and how much maintenance it needs. It is also the specification item most often reduced to a colour code, when texture and gloss level matter just as much.

Gloss finishes reflect every light source in a room, including windows, ceiling fittings and the panel's own neighbours. In a large run of cabinets this amplifies any deviation in flatness. Matte and textured surfaces absorb that reflection and are far more forgiving on wide elevations, which is why they dominate professional kitchen and office specifications.
Embossed and structured papers add depth that a plain printed surface cannot match. Textured finishes also improve grip and disguise minor scuffs, which extends the visible service life of high-use items such as drawer fronts, worktop edges and shop counters.
