Kitchen cabinetry is the toughest interior application for any panel material. Heat, steam, grease, repeated cleaning and constant loading all act on the same carcass. Melamine laminated plywood handles that combination better than most alternatives, provided the core and bonding are specified properly.

Why Plywood Cores Suit Kitchen Cabinets

A plywood core holds screws at the hinge and runner positions far better than a low-density particle core, and it resists the warping and swelling that follow a leak under the sink. Cross-grain construction keeps the panel flat across wide cabinet runs, which matters more in a kitchen than in any other room.

Where Each Component Is Used

Selection Points That Decide Performance

• Core grade — eucalyptus, birch or hardwood cores resist moisture better than light poplar in sink and dishwasher zones.
• Glue line — specify moisture resistant (MR) or WBP bonding for under-sink and appliance areas.
• Surface — matte or textured finishes hide fingerprints and fine scratches better than high gloss on doors.
• Edge banding — the melamine edge must accept PVC or ABS banding with a clean, tight joint; poor edge quality is the most visible defect in a finished kitchen.
• Formaldehyde class — E1 minimum for most markets; E0 or CARB Phase 2 where regulations or clients require it.

Fabrication Notes

Cut with a sharp, fine-tooth blade and a scoring blade where available to avoid chipping the melamine face. Seal cut edges immediately, especially on panels near water. Allow the panels to acclimatise to workshop conditions before machining so the finished dimensions stay stable. Fasteners used near cut edges should be pilot-drilled to prevent splitting.

Appearance and Decor

Decors are usually matched across the carcass, doors and visible fillers. Wood grain, solid colour, matte and textured finishes are all available, and decor consistency between production batches should be confirmed in writing — a subtle shade shift is very obvious once the kitchen is assembled under lighting.
