The designation 8.7/15kV indicates the rated voltage level, where 8.7kV is the rated phase-to-earth voltage (U₀) and 15kV is the rated phase-to-phase voltage (U) in 50Hz AC systems.

The 3*35 configuration means three copper cores, each with a cross-sectional area of 35mm². The cable is manufactured in multiple layers, each serving a specific function:

1. Conductor: Stranded bare annealed copper wires, class 2 to IEC 60228, round compacted. The copper purity ensures low electrical resistance and stable conductivity over the cable life.

2. Conductor screen: Semi-conducting compound extruded over the conductor. This layer ensures uniform electrical field distribution and prevents partial discharge.

3. Insulation: XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene). This material offers excellent dielectric properties, high insulation resistance, low dielectric loss and stable performance across a wide temperature range.

4. Insulation screen: Extruded semi-conducting layer combined with swellable tape. This layer is essential for controlling electrical stress under operating voltage.

5. Copper tape screen: Wrapped around the insulated cores. Provides protection against electromagnetic interference and serves as earth path for leakage current.

6. Inner sheath: PVC applied over the laid-up cores, with suitable fillers to maintain a round profile.

7. Armour: Double steel tape applied helically. This layer protects against mechanical damage during installation and service, including impact, compression and rodent attack.

8. Outer sheath: UV stabilised PVC compound, black. Resistant to moisture, soil chemicals and general environmental exposure.
