UL 83 THHN Building Wire – 600V Copper Conductor for Conduit Wiring & Control Panels
THHN cable (Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated) is one of the most widely used single-conductor building wires in North America and international projects. Rated 600V, the conductor is soft annealed copper, insulation is heat-resistant PVC, with an outer nylon jacket. It is suitable for conduit wiring (EMT/PVC), control panels, and internal equipment wiring .
Compared to ordinary THW or TW wires, THHN offers better heat resistance (90°C dry location) and a low-friction nylon layer that greatly improves pulling efficiency. It also meets UL 83 VW-1 flame retardancy, complying with building electrical safety codes .

Q: What is the difference between THHN and THWN-2?
A: Per UL standards, THHN is rated 90°C dry / 75°C wet. THWN-2 is rated 90°C wet and dry, offering better moisture resistance. Most modern cables are dual-rated “THHN/THWN-2”, which can be used interchangeably. [NEC 310.4]
Q: Can THHN cable be directly buried?
A: No. THHN is not designed for direct burial. It must be installed in conduit. For direct burial applications, use UF or USE-2 cables per NEC 300.5.
Q: How to select the correct AWG size for a load?
A: Refer to NEC Table 310.16, then apply ambient temperature correction factors (Table 310.15(B)(2)(a)) and conduit fill adjustments. Example: 12 AWG copper THHN at 30°C with 3 current-carrying conductors → 20A (75°C terminal limitation).
Q: What is the expected service life of THHN cable?
A: In dry indoor applications, 30–40 years. Main aging factors: prolonged overload (>90°C), direct UV exposure, chemical attack, and mechanical wear.
Q: Is aluminum conductor THHN available?
A: UL 83 allows aluminum THHN, but in practice aluminum building wires are often XHHW-2 or SE cables. Copper THHN remains the preferred choice for terminal reliability.
