Physical and Chemical Properties
- Appearance: Colorless needle-like crystals at room temperature; clear liquid above 36°C.
- Molecular Formula: C₃H₄O₃; Molecular Weight: 88.06 g/mol.
- Melting Point: 36–38°C; Boiling Point: 243–248°C (atmospheric pressure).
- Density: 1.32 g/cm³ at 40°C; Flash Point: 143–150°C.
- Solubility: Highly soluble in water, alcohols, ethers and other polar solvents.
- Polarity: High dielectric constant, strong polarity, good ability to dissolve lithium salts.
- Stability: Hygroscopic, flammable, stable under normal conditions; incompatible with strong acids and oxidizing agents.
Applications
- Lithium-ion Battery Electrolytes: Main high-permittivity solvent in battery electrolyte systems. Used in blends with DMC, EMC and other carbonates to form stable SEI films, improve cycle life and low-temperature performance of lithium batteries.
- Organic Synthesis: Green intermediate for the production of dimethyl carbonate, ethylene glycol, vinylene carbonate and other fine chemicals. Also used as a protecting agent for hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in pharmaceutical and pesticide synthesis.
- Plastics & Textiles: Plasticizer, polymer modifier and curing agent for resins and fibers.
- Gas Treatment & Surface Processing: Absorbent for acid gas separation; cleaning and treatment agent for metal surfaces.
- Specialty Solvents: Used in electrochemistry, cosmetics, and industrial cleaning formulations.
