Refining furnaces, also known as secondary refining furnaces or ladle refining equipment, are used for deep treatment of molten steel from primary furnaces (EAF, converter, etc.). They aim to improve molten steel purity, adjust composition and temperature, and meet the production requirements of continuous casting and high-quality steel.
The LF furnace is the most widely used secondary refining equipment, with specifications covering 6t to 300t. Through electric arc heating and argon stirring, it achieves temperature increase, fine-tuning of composition, and deep desulfurization of molten steel.
Electric Arc Heating :Raises molten steel temperature, compensates for process temperature drop, and maintains continuous casting temperature.
Argon Stirring: Promotes steel-slag reaction and accelerates desulfurization and deoxidation by blowing argon through bottom vent bricks.
White Slag Refining:Creates reducing slag for deep desulfurization and impurity removal.

A Ladle Furnace offloads most secondary refining tasks from the primary melter. Its main functions include:
The porous plug in the ladle bottom stirs the molten metal with argon gas to promote homogenization. A top lance mechanism serves as a backup stirring method if the plug circuit is temporarily out of service. When the ladle is placed on the transfer car, the gas supply connection is made automatically.
Fumes and particulates generated during heating and alloying exit the water‑cooled ladle roof through various openings. These emissions are captured by ambient air drawn into a lateral‑draft fume hood mounted above the roof.
The ladle roof is typically water‑cooled, with a refractory center or delta section. It is designed to fully cover the top of the ladle when lowered to the operating position.
