Needle felting is a popular fiber arts craft that creates felt without the use of water. Special needles used in industrial felting machines serve as sculpting tools. These needles feature notches along the shaft that grab the top layer of fibers and tangle them with inner layers as the needle enters the wool. Since the notches face downward toward the needle tip, they don't pull fibers out during exit. Once tangled and compressed using the needle, the resulting felt becomes strong and suitable for creating jewelry or sculpture. Finer details can be achieved using hand-held tools with single or multiple needles (2-7), making this technique popular for both 2D and 3D felted work.
