Preparing samples as homogeneous glass beads or discs enables geochemists to rapidly determine elemental composition down to sub-parts per million (ppm) ranges. Spectral analysis of alumina content offers superior precision compared to gravimetry, supporting streamlined workflows with enhanced repeatability.
Selecting appropriate X-ray flux chemicals is crucial. While lithium fusion serves as a general-purpose method for decomposing geological sample matrices, high-temperature chemical interactions can be demanding on samples and contribute to labware degradation.
Suitable Lithium Tetraborate Fluxes for Alumina Analysis
Lithium tetraborate (Li₂B₄O₇) represents the most commonly used flux chemical for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Its transparency to light element X-rays ensures no interference with key spectral analyses. However, its relatively high melting point (930°C) can complicate fusion with certain ores like bauxite.
